I am endorsing Bernie Lunzer for President of the News Guild. Many of the reasons are evident, but some are not. The number one reason I support Bernie is his experience and understanding of the Guild and the wider labor movement.
There are some of us who remember the good old days. That was when the company offered 3% wage increases, fully paid health insurance and much more. The past twenty years have been a struggle for the newspaper industry, but despite that, we – under Bernie’s leadership – are still strong and forging ahead. Through the organizing efforts for the past many years the Guild is growing and thriving.
I first met Bernie when I was President at the Brockton local. I have also served as a national staff representative and a local administrator. Bernie has always been responsive to my questions and has helped the members innumerable times, whether it was when he was Secretary/Treasurer of the Newspaper Guild or since he has been President of the News Guild. Many years ago, it was he who first proposed our name change from the Newspaper Guild to the News Guild, because we were no longer just delivering news on paper. He recognized that news was going to be delivered in a different way and thus he was in the foreground with finding ways for TNG to adapt to the changes ushered in with digital news.
Because of Bernie’s leadership, The News Guild has flourished, adding more than 3,000 employees to our ranks over the past 5 years, including Pioneer Valley unit and the Hartford Courant unit. The Guild is an inclusive union. We represent journalists, advertising and circulation, along with language workers and employees of many non-profit agencies. All of these categories of membership have grown under Bernie’s leadership.
Since I have been Administrator at the Providence Newspaper Guild, we have had many victories and our most recent agreements in Providence and Worcester would not have happened without Bernie’s leadership. The global settlements the Guild was able to achieve has given our members in Worcester and Providence 80 percent of their contract back and has empowered our members.
Bernie is a caring, responsive fighter for truth, justice and the American way!!! . He has never backed down from a battle in support of a local. And he has made a difference in workers’ lives.
Vote Bernie Lunzer for President of the News Guild.
