Marian Needham – Guild Executive Vice-President
I urge the re-election of TNG President Bernie Lunzer because his experience, skill and knowledge empowers us to continue the extraordinary growth and expansion the Guild has achieved in recent years. During Bernie’s most recent term as president, TNG has organized 53 new workplaces, adding more than 2,700 potential members to our ranks.
Against a backdrop of a soft hiring freeze across CWA, Bernie secured funding to fill four TNG field representative vacancies. Then he successfully advocated the hiring of six organizers under the Strategic Industry Fund, an achievement that is at the core of the Guild’s current organizing success.
As CWA Vice President, Bernie encouraged CWA to support the Journalist Protection Act, and to join industry groups in the successful opposition to job-killing newsprint tariffs. Within CWA, he is actively advocating a plan that will protect reliable, ongoing revenue for the Strategic Industry Fund. His plan will provide all districts and sectors of CWA the resources needed to organize aggressively and secure strong contracts for our members.
Bernie led the International Pension Plan Board of Trustees through the complicated issues and difficult decisions related to freezing the current plan. And then he spearheaded the move to launch the multi-employer Adjustable Pension Plan, which offers a contemporary and reliable retirement plan for Guild members.
Bernie knows the true power of the union is rooted in what can be accomplished when we work together. He understands the future of the Guild rests in the organizing we are doing today, because he was an architect of those organizing plans.
Lets continue to build on our success by re-electing Bernie Lunzer President of The NewsGuild-CWA.
